1. Walk Around the Gardens at Schönbrunn Palace
Schönbrunn Palace is the first treasure you’ll see on every list of things to see in Vienna. It’s the perfect picture of Vienna’s historical grandeur and now an UNESCO World Heritage site. Make the hike all the way up to Gloriette and enjoy a view of the city.
2. Explore Prater Park
Prater is an amusement park full of rides, concession stands, and a ferris wheel. General admission is free, but rides do have a small fee–might I say, very worth it.
3. Enjoy an Opera Performance
Yep. For free. The world-renowned Vienna State Opera screens performances outside of the opera house for the public for free. This happens in April, May, June, and September, and of course is dependent on weather.
4. St. Stephen’s Cathedral
What is most impressive to me about this cathedral is the colorful tile covering the roof–unlike any other gothic cathedral I’ve seen. This building is symbolic of Vienna and a must-see attraction for visitors. Entrance to the cathedral is free.
5. Hang Out at Naschmarkt
The Naschmarkt is a large indoor/outdoor food and flea market. It’s not hard to find free samples of traditional Austrian food by walking around, or stay a while at one of the sit-down restaurants.
6. Watch an Outdoor Movie
In the summer, outdoor movie screenings pop up all over the place. Grab a blanket and hang with the locals at one of these open-air viewings.
